The position of Church Custodian is a salaried position under the Staff Parish Relations Committee (SPRC) with general supervision under the Board of Trustees. The Custodian has the primary responsibility for cleaning the church in such a way to promote health and safety while reducing the spread of infection. It is the role of the Custodian to follow daily, weekly, and monthly cleaning schedules including, but not limited to, the classrooms, nursery, kitchen, kitchen storage room, parlor, office areas, bathrooms, other storage areas, and entrances. The custodian shall perform these custodial duties without interference with scheduled church activities.
A base of 28 hours of work per pay period (pay period is twice a month) is estimated to complete the custodial duties.
Compensation is established by the SPRC based on experience of the candidate. The rate of compensation is reviewed annually as prescribed by the Book of Discipline.
Education and Experience
It is preferred that the Custodian have training in the custodial field. Experience in the custodial field is desirable. Knowledge of proper cleaning methods required.
Additional Information and Requirements
Ability to pass a physical exam every two years and a TB test yearly. Must be able to comply with background check, including fingerprints, as required by the agency and/or Ohio Licensing Agency. Ability to present a positive image of the organization to members of the community by using effective oral and written communications skills. Eyesight must be within normal ranges with correction glasses or lens if needed. Must disclose any communicable diseases. Manual dexterity sufficient to manipulate cleaning supplies and equipment. Must have effective organizational, problem solving, and time management skills. Ability to learn and comprehend information from Procedures Manuals and other materials. Must be able to physically move through the facility and classrooms. Ability to lift 55 pounds is required. Successful experience working as an effective member of a team desirable. Experience successfully working with a culturally diverse staff & clients also desirable. Regular access to a reliable vehicle, valid Ohio driver’s license and vehicle insurance is preferred. Must possess personal qualifications including emotional maturity, willingness to cooperate with the aims of Aldersgate UMC, respect for children and adults from various cultures and backgrounds, flexibility, patience, good personal hygiene, and be of sound physical and mental health.
Tasks may involve possible exposure to blood, bodily fluids or tissues. Possible exposure to communicable diseases. This job involves standing for long periods as well as stooping, squatting, lifting, carrying, pushing, and climbing. Must be able to work a flexible schedule, as well as travel, enter, and exit a vehicle without assistance and withstand exposure to adverse weather conditions. Wearing protective equipment, such as latex gloves, per OHSA regulations is required.
